PROSTATE-FACTS
Prostate cancer is the most common form of cancer. It is also the second leading cause of cancer-related deaths among men in United States. The prostate is a walnut-shaped gland found in the front of the rectum sitting just below the bladder. In order to work properly, the prostate requires male hormones like testosterone to help control and regulate normal sexual functioning. The prostate gland plays an important role in the male reproductive system by making a white fluid that becomes a portion of the volume of semen. The prostate fluid also helps to nourish and protect the sperm during intercourse. Three main problems or issues can occur in the prostate gland:1.inflammation or infection, 2.enlargement, or 3. prostate cancer. Neither one of the prostate problems or issues lead to each other, but it is possible to have two prostate problems or issues at the same time. Some prostate problems or issues may have no symptoms at all, while other prostate problems or issues may have some or all of the following symptoms; pain, urgent need to urinate, chills and fever, pain in the back & lower genital area, bladder infections, discomfort in the pelvic area, decreased force in the stream of urine, blood in the urine or semen, erectile dysfunction. Annual prostate screenings become very important for men over the age 40 (35) if African American and or have a family history of cancer. The Prostate Specific Antigen (PSA) blood test and the Digital Rectal Exam (DRE) are both forms of prostate health screening. The PSA detects abnormal levels of PSA in the blood produced by the prostate, while the DRE allows a provider to physically examine through the rectum the prostate with a gloved finger. Awareness and annual screenings are ways that men can maintain a healthy prostate.

Three ways to find BREAST CANCER early 1. MAMMOGRAMS-yearly mammograms are recommended starting at age 40. 2. BREAST EXAMS- breast exams by your doctor or nurse should be part of a health exam about every three years for women in their 20's and 30's and every year for woman age 40 and older. 3. BREAST SELF AWARENESS- women should know how their breasts normally look and feel and should report ANY CHANGE promptly to their doctor or nurse.

What is a COLONOSCOPY
A Colonoscopy is a procedure that provides an inside view of the entire colon. Clinicians can check the lining of the colon for any abnormalities using a small camera attached to a flexible tube. This tube is inserted through the anus and slowly advanced through the rectum and colon. Your colon must be clean in order for the clinician to see any abnormalities. This can be done by taking strong laxatives and or enemas, not eating or drinking the night before the procedure and having a clear liquid diet 1-2 days before the procedure. This means drinking clear liquids like water, tea and eating clear foods such as broth, bouillon, and gelitin. Your practitioner will provide you with specific instructions prior to your procedure.
COLORECTAL CANCER
Colorectal Cancer is the THIRD leading cause of Cancer death. The good news is colorectal cancer can be prevented if caught early, colorectal cancer can be cured. Screening tests can help prevent colorectal cancer by finding POLYPS before they turn into cancer, POLYPS are non-cancerous growths of tissue that can become cancerous if they are not removed in time. So please get yourself tested if you are 50 and older, 45 if you have a family history of polyps or colorectal cancer.
